I’ve known about these guitars for sometime know, I have never played one they look and sound sweet. So I’ve been thinking a lot recently how I want to start building guitars, I can’t ever imagine I’ll never make any decent money out of it but it’s something I want to do, I get bored easily and this will be another hobby that will keep me sane;) Its far removed from the skills of a professional lutheir, but it looks fun and interesting. I think by making one of these I’ll gain a little understanding in fretting, guitar electronics and a little more experience with wood working.
What is a Cigar Box Guitar!
If you haven’t heard of a cigar box guitar (CBG) before have a look at this video, I found this guys blog called Smojo Guitars he has some great info on these CBGs and made me want to make one.” These are the simplest of stringed instruments to make, they can be as simple or as complicated as you like. The main thing is when you make a CBG there are no rules, it can be 1,2,3 or even 12 string, there are no rules which is what excites me about making one of these guitars.
Who makes a Cigar Box Guitar!
I also came across this dude JuJu who makes what I would call boutique cigar box guitars, he has turned this ‘Craft’ into an art and is going to be a huge inspiration. On his site you will see that he has sold many of these instruments and has sold two to a UK based artist called “Hollowbelly”. About 18 months ago a friend of mine played me some of this dudes songs and I completely fell for the dirty delta sound that theses instruments create. So its about time to start making some of our own.
