Learn Electronic Or Classical Piano

When learning to play piano, the question often arises “should I use an electronic piano/keyboard or invest in a true classical piano?”.

Realistically, an electronic touch sensitive keyboard is a perfectly adequate tool to assist you in learning the piano, and although an experienced pianist may well disagree, the emulated sound can be almost impossible to distinguish from the real thing if recorded.

Key spacing tends to be identical to a classical piano (unless your using a miniature with intentionally small keys) therefore learning the hand placements and chord spread etc will be fine on the artificial instrument (though once again this may be argued by a traditional pianist for reasons explained later).

The plus of using a traditional piano over its electronic counterpart is really (in my personal opinion) a matter of feeling rather than acoustics.

If playing a piece containing heavy low octave backing, you can actually feel the vibration feeding back through the keys as you begin to concentrate on your performance and nothing else, giving you a completely different experience to that of the artificial piano.

The pedals on a real traditional piano also add to the skill and dexterity of playing, enhancing both your learning and musical experience massively exceeding the effect of any (or at least most) electronic musical instruments.

But that said, not everyone yearns to be a classical pianist and for these people, the electronic piano opens a whole world of musical possibilities albeit involving less feeling.

Normally learning classical piano involves travelling to a music instructors premises and using the piano onsite which can prove expensive (though admittedly less expensive and space consuming than buying your own instrument), but if you take the electronic option, then the world of home internet learning opens up to you, and this platform of technology becomes a rollercoaster of information influx that will surprise and delight you for many years to come.
